BURNLEY GOLF CLUB was was orginally mapped out in 1905 by George Lowe the professional at Lytham St. Annes. Iin 1908 the course was redesigned by Alec (Sandy) Herd, former British Open Champion at Hoylake in 1902.
The course was altered and increased to 18 holes between its inception in 1905 and 1929, as well as many other alterations. It was however in December 1929 that the course was visited by James Braid, 5 times British Open winner and renowned golf course designer. James Braid suggested at the time, three new holes, over thirty bunkers, several new tee beds and mounds. The local paper called it extravangant!
Nevertheless the Council at the time took the decision to go ahead and the course was redesigned to James Braid's suggested specification. The layout of the course still remains the same after all this time, which is a testament to James Braid who at the time said of the course that "In time it will become a course of distinction and will need little or no constructive alteration" He also went on to say that "the course was beautifully situated, undulating but not unduly so and the holes are of such character that a player must have all the strokes at his command before good scoring can be hoped for"
Burnley Golf Club stands on the fringe of the Habegham Eaves Moor and is known as a Fair but Challenging, course offering a good test of golf for all standards.
As well as being a pleasant place to enjoy a round of golf, there are also superb views across the town and surrounding villages, below Pendle Hill. On a clear day you can see the "Three Peaks" - Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-Ghent.
